skyguide

swiss air navigation services ltd

Skyguide is in charge of air traffic control in Switzerland and in parts of adjacent foreign airspace and directs the traffic safely through the most dense and one of the most complex European airspace sections. It is a non-profit joint stock company. Most of its shares are owned by the Confederation. Skyguide’s main domicile is in Geneva and the company has about 1,400 employees at 14 locations in Switzerland, including airbases that are used by both the military and civilians in Alpnach, Dubendorf, Emmen, Locarno, Meiringen, Payerne and Sion. In 2001, military and civilian air traffic control was merged, making it possible to manage Swiss airspace safer and more efficiently.

About a third of skyguide’s employees work as air traffic controllers. Several times a year, the company owned training centre trains new air traffic controllers, including tactical fighter controllers, who serve the Swiss Air Force. They direct and monitor military air traffic and the tactical missions, which sometimes transcend the Swiss national border.
