The CFO is integrated in the MEI Air Base Command. He organises, directs and monitors flight operations at the air base and within the control zone (CTR) and terminal control area (TMA), and coordinates aircraft missions with the air operations centre (AOC). He decides on flight operations under doubtful meteorological conditions and is always in contact with the CFOs of alternate air bases. He also supervises the state of runways and taxiways, so that they meet the demands required for operating the aircraft.
The CFO is also the link between the pilots and SKYGUIDE air traffic control. He monitors the flight programme and informs air traffic control accordingly.
In emergencies he lends support to the pilots if necessary and orders assistance or rescue operations.
Furthermore, the CFO supports both the commander of the air base command and the wing commanders in working out procedures at the air base and within the control zone.
