Air base commands
Distributed across several airfields and installations throughout Switzerland, five air base commands ensure readiness and availability of all assets required for operation and training of the Swiss Air Force. Their main missions are daily operation of the military airfields, the command and telecommunication facilities as well as the entire infrastructure. In agreement with the civilian armament enterprise RUAG Aerospace they guarantee repair work and in-field maintenance of the air force's special equipment. Training of unit specialists as well as the safeguarding of air force interests towards authorities and population are further areas of interest.
The Meiringen Air Base Command is responsible for permanent operational readiness of the air force in the canton of Bern. Many of its approximately 100 employees work at the Meiringen Military Air Base. You will find members of the air base command even at Bern-Belp Airport .
Operational command, personnel administration, operational and construction planning, IT coordination, quality management etc. are housed in the former school building of Unterbach. Specialists supervise important fields of work such as finances, environmental protection, real estate, monitoring, archiving and photography service.
The Meiringen Air Base Command is responsible throughout Switzerland for planning relating to the readiness of the F-5 Tiger aircraft. In this function it lends support to both facilities and units, for example by updating instructions and training resources, providing ground based equipment, analysing malfunctions and offering advice on amendments.

The No. 11 Air Squadron, one of the three F/A-18 squadrons of the Swiss Armed Forces, is an important pillar in Swiss air defence. While the two other F/A-18 squadrons operate from their base in Payerne in the west of Switzerland, the No. 11 Air Squadron, which has been stationed in Unterbach since January 2006, carries out its missions daily from the Meiringen Air Base in the Berner Oberland.
There is air traffic at the Meiringen-Unterbach Air Base throughout the year. Flying and shooting operations as well as the obligatory checks that must be carried out after every use of the aircraft constitute but a few of the manifold duties of the staff employed here. Administration and maintenance of the entire aircraft ground technical equipment and observation of the extensive regulations are further important aspects that have to be competently attended to. In addition teachers are made available for various training purposes on the F/A18 aircraft. Many of the employees assigned to the aircraft come from various special air base workshops.

Air traffic control is provided by SKYGUIDE air traffic control. Air traffic controllers regulate movements on the airfield, coordinate landings and take-offs and direct both civilian and military air traffic in the wider environment of the air base. When the weather is bad, aircraft are directed by radar and radio. Due to its topography, Meiringen is Switzerland's most demanding military air base.
Special conditions prevail at the Bern-Belpmoos Airport. Federal Councillors, distinguished guests from Switzerland and abroad as well as other VIPs are frequent guests. Consequently, the staff of the Belp service agency are primarily concerned with federal helicopters and VIP aircraft.
Through its reliable work in all fields, the staff of the Meiringen Air Base Comannd considerably contributes to the Swiss Air Force and thus the armed forces being able to rely on the firm support of air base commands.
